Each passing day speeds us all towards some sort of change. Some of them are known and anticipated, some not. This week I was informed that my application to practice Social Work in California was approved. Although a small one, it was still a hurdle and took some focus, work and time to accomplish. Luckily, my prior experience and hours were accepted, however I did have to take some specific online courses and prepare for and pass a test in Law and Ethics. Just like so many others, I had to change my daily habits and put my student hat back on.
Although these things were somewhat time consuming, the need to remind myself of important principles, and learn some new ones, added to my growth and development as a person and professional. I’m grateful for the experience as the reinforcement of solid foundational skills and principles will make my new and upcoming practice stronger.
This experience has reminded me that the benefits of change can be multifaceted. Confidence grows, knowledge increases and depending on what you are changing, health and life satisfaction can improve. Changes often motivate people to modify other things in their lives they feel would be beneficial. I acknowledge that change is often challenging and difficult, but it is worth the effort when you consider the alternative.
