THIRTY-FIVE YEARS

The passage of more time means more change. My wife and I have been married for 35 years now. Sometimes it feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels like the entire 35 years. Some of the bigger changes are three college degrees, 17 moves, four children, and all the countless challenges that come with these big life events. I’ve lost both my parents and a brother, she a sister. Couple these major things with the other challenges, problems and difficulties partners must solve to stay together and survive as a partnership, means dealing with a lot of change.

We are definitely older, have learned a thing or two about how to get along and make the partnership function and have some confidence in where we are going. However, I think we both know that there will continue to be a lot of changes and challenges in our future that will not be easy. Some of these include sending our last two children out into the world, moving again and figuring out life post military, and dealing with the plethora of physical aches, pains and body changes that seem to be happening to us frequently with age.

Although I know there are many changes ahead, I hope we can use the resiliency we have developed to face the predictable and unpredictable things we will face and work through and accept these gracefully as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of life.
